TUJ condemns police action against journalists
Tiruchirapalli, Aug 10 (UNI) The Tiruchirapalli District unit of the Tamil Nadu Union of Journalists (TUJ) today strongly condemned the Karur District Police Administration for filing false criminal cases against journalists here.
In a statement here, A J Baskaran, President, TUJ said 18 journalists, who went to cover a fire incident at a bus body-building unit at Karur on Friday, were abused and threatened by the police.
Instead of taking action against real culprits, police were filing cases against the journalists, he added.
He also urged Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi to instruct the SP, Karur, to withdraw cases against the scribes.
In a separate statement, Mr L Shawnawaz Khan, General Secretary, Press Club, Tiruchirapalli District, condemned the Karur police for filing false criminal cases against the scribes.
He also asked the district authorities to withdraw the cases immediately.
A resolution, which was adopted at an emergency meeting of the Club, pointed out that the act of the police was a crude attempt to throttle the voice of the media.
