Take legal steps to stop private varsity: CPM
Chennai, Aug 10: Tamil Nadu unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) today urged the state government to take all legal steps to prevent a private university from starting a law college.
Condemning the police lathicharge on Tirunelveli Law College students, who opposed Thanjavur-based Sashthra University starting a private law college, CPI(M) state unit secretary N Varadarajan, in a statement here, said the government should not allow the private law college.
Though the state government had made it clear that it did not allow the university from starting the law college, the university had moved the Supreme Court and obtained permission to start the college without a 'no objection certificate' from the state government.
The government should take all legal steps and prevent the university from starting the college and ensure that law education was not commercialised in the state, he said.
When the Tirunelveli Law College students launched an agitation, the police, after entering the college premises, ''brutally assaulted'' the students and faculty, Mr Varadarajan alleged and condemned the police action.
