Death toll mounts to 19 in Andhra Pradesh

{image-heavy rains09_09082008.jpg www.oneindia.com}Hyderabad, Aug 9: The death toll in torrential rains and other rain related incidents in Andhra Pradesh rose to 19 on Saturday, Aug 9 even as the state government alerted the respective district administrations and all departments to take up relief measures and prevent loss of lives.

According to police, the woman's mother was also injured in the incident. The low pressure formed over Northwest and adjoining Westcentral Bay of Bengal off Orissa had caused heavy rainfalls in the city since Friday evening. Meanwhile, the vehicular traffic between Vijayawada and Bhadrachalam came to a halt due to breaches in the Eppalla rivulet in A Konduru mandal in Krishna district. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy's one-day visit to Krishna district was cancelled due to heavy rains and strong winds.

At least 13 people were killed in heavy rains and flash floods that have wreaked havoc in Andhra Pradesh on Saturday Aug 9.

In the state capital, eight people were killed in three incidents of house collapse as incessant rain since Friday night inundated dozens of residential area. Three people were killed in Medak district while two people were killed in Vijayawada in the coastal district of Krishna. With this, the death toll in heavy rains and flash floods since last week rose to 26.

According to meteorological department, the state capital recorded 13.6 cm rainfall on Friday night. The heavy rains resulted in inundation of roads and residential areas, disrupting electricity and communication lines. The rains, under the influence of a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal, led to flash floods as several rivulets, streams and tanks were overflowing.
