India's Tombo Devi crashed out of Judo

{image-beijing+dark rings_09082008.jpg news.oneindia.in}Beijing, Aug 9: India's Olympic campaign received another setback when judoka Khumujam Tombi Devi bowed out of the women's 48kg event in the preliminary round on the opening day here today.

Tombi's challenge lasted only two and a half minutes as she was outclassed and outsmarted by Ana Hormigo of Portugal at the USTB gymnasium. The Manipuri judoka looked in all sorts of trouble and failed to produce the magic that won her a gold in the European Judo Union (EJU) championship last year. However, all is not lost for India as another judoka, Divya Tewar, will battle it out in the 78kg category.

Archery, badminton, boxing, rowing, swimming and sailing are the other events in which the Indians will participate later today.

After Anjali Bhagwat and Aveneet Kaur Sidhu failed to qualify for the finals in the women's 10 meter Air Rifle event, Manavjit Singh Sandhu and Mansher Singh will carry forward the hopes in the clay pigeon trap event later today.
