New Delhi, Aug 8 (UNI) All through the past couple of weeks, he has charmed viewers with his 'Rugged machismo' and 'witty repartees' in 'Fear Factor Khatron Ke Khiladi', the adventure reality show being aired on the new General Entertainment channel 'Colors'.
Akshay Kumar has garnered huge popularity across India through 'Fear factor Khatron Ke Khiladi' in just over a week of its telecast, coupled with a rise in his stock in Bollywood in the last few years and thanks to a series of successes like 'Namaste London', 'Bhool Bhulaiya', 'Hey Baby' and 'Welcome', which have generated an unprecedented buzz for his new release 'Singh Is King', being released in cinema halls worldwide today.
Further heightening the excitement around the film is the presence of the ethereal Katrina Kaif, who plays the female lead in 'Singh Is King'. For, the last few years have witnessed an upswing in the popularity of this model-turned-actor thanks to success of 'Namaste London', 'Partner', 'Apne', 'Race' and 'Welcome'.
Trade sources said the strong curiosity surrounding the film is in large part due to the fact that it features the hit pair of Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif, who teamed up in two of last year's biggest hits - 'Namastey London' and 'Welcome'.
Shot in Punjab, Australia and Egypt, the movie has generated tremendous interest in film circles due to its music, which has already climbed popularity charts across India.
A unique feature of 'Singh Is king' is that it has American rapper Snoop Dogg featuring in the movie wearing a turban. While the music of the film has been scored by Pritam Chakraborty, Britain's popular bhangra band RDB has also composed a song for the film.
Incidentally, 'Singh Is Kinng' will be the widest ever day-and-date release of a solo Akshay Kumar starrer in the U.K, Ireland and Europe, In U.K and Ireland, the film previewed yesterday with a general release today on a staggering 70 prints.
'Singh Is Kinng' will have a day-and-date release in both Dublin and Belfast, in recognition of the growing Asian community in Ireland.
In addition to this, in Europe, the film opens on 10 prints in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg. There will be a deferred release in Poland.
'Singh Is King' is the story of Happy Singh, a Sikh living in a village in Punjab. The villagers are fed up of Happy, the good samaritan, because most of his good deeds turn into hilarious, and often disastrous situations. Out of desperation, they decide to send him to Australia to bring back to the village Lucky Singh, who migrated to Australia years ago and is presently the 'king' of the Australian underworld, functioning with help of his associates - Javed Jaffrey, Neha Dhupia, Manoj Pahwa, Yashpal Sharma, Kamal Chopra and Sudhanshu Pande.
The happy-go-lucky bumpkin, taking his mission a bit too seriously, embarks on his journey accompanied by his friend, Tony Singh (Om Puri). The high point of his journey is his chance meeting with Sonia (Katrina Kaif) with whom he falls in love. But when he reaches his destination, things take a turn and Happy lands up in a series of comic misadventures, leaving him penniless.
An affectionate elderly lady (Kirron Kher) rescues him and also helps him meet Lucky. Happy saves Lucky's life by risking his own.
Following the hilarious altercation, Lucky lands up in hospital paralysed, and Happy, unexpectedly, finds the tables turned on him when he is expected to assume the role of the new leader of the gang.
