Panel to identify sources of pollution in Satluj, Sirhind canal

Chandigarh, Aug 8 (UNI) The Punjab Government has constituted a five-member committee to undertake a survey of the entire reach of river Sutlej and the Sirhind canal system to identify the various sources of pollution and to recommend remedial measures.

Disclosing this here today, a spokesman of the state government said that the decision to this effect was taken in a meeting held on Wednesday chaired by Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to review the progress of the cleaning of Buddha Nullah.

The committee, headed by Special Secretary Irrigation Alok Shekhar, had also been asked to undertake a survey to identify the unauthorised discharge of effluents into the rivers and canals on one hand and the treated effluents being discharged in the rivers which did not comply the prescribed pollution norms as well as the municipal and domestic waste on the other. The panel had been asked to submit its report positively within a fortnight.

The other members of the panel would be Chief Engineer (Canals), Chief Engineer (Drainage), Chief Engineer (Water and Sanitation) and the Member Secretary of Punjab Pollution Control Board.
