Dubai, Aug 8 (UNI) A Nepali housemaid is fighting for her dignity in Riyadh after suffering sadistic torture and rape by her sponsor, as more and more Nepali women fall victim to abuse in Saudi Arabia.
This is the eighth case of the brutal rape of a Nepali maid reported within the last three months in Saudi Arabia. Rape is punishable by lashes, jail or death in the Kingdom.
The woman, identified only as Maya, walked into the Nepalese Embassy yesterday but her sponsor has not been identified, detained for questioning or mentioned as a suspect in the crime, said Pushparaj Bhattarai, a spokesman for the Nepalese Embassy.
Maya, whose age was not disclosed, had marks of physical and sexual abuse, including injuries in her abdomen.
She was later sent to a local hospital for a comprehensive medical examination, including a DNA test yesterday itself, Bhattarai told Arab News.
The woman belongs to the Nepalese village of Nawal Parasi. There are about 50,000 Nepalese working in the Kingdom, about 90 per cent of them as maids. This figure is relatively small compared to the number of foreign workers in the Kingdom. For comparison, there are up to 500,000 Sri Lankan workers in the Kingdom in any given year.
