Mah retains overall general championship in Jr Athletic meet

Pune, Aug 8 (UNI) Hosts Maharashtra dominated the fields and retained the overall general championship for the fourth year in succession in the 20th edition of the West Zone Junior Athletic Championship, which concluded at the Baburao Sanas sports complex here today.

The hosts, making the most of the home conditions, garnered 54 gold, 43 silver and 23 bronze medals, outstripping all opposition to capture the team title in all the eight age groups for boys and girls namely under-20, under-18, under-16 and under-14 respectively and lifted the Pune Mayor's trophy.

President of Arjun Probhodini of Mumbai Umesh Naik was the guest of honour, who gave away the trophies. Maharashtra Amateur Athletic Association (MAAA) vice-president Advocate Abhay Chhajed presided over the function. The three-day meet was conducted under the aegis of the Arjun Probhodini, Mumbai and the MAAA.

More than 600 athletes from six states namely Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhatishgarh took part in the meet.

The West Zone squad thus selected will be taking part in the all India Inter-Zonal Athletics championship slated to be held at Jamshedpur from August 20 to 22.

The other dignitaries who graced the occasion included Gujarat Athletic Association general secretary Ashok Patel, Goa Athletic Association Secretary Anita Rodrigues and the Athletic Federation of India (AFI) observer Nandu Parmar. Raju Kulkarni proposed a vote of thanks.

The overall winners in their respective age groups areas follows.
