Jamnagar celebrates 469th annivarsary
Jamnagar, Aug 8 (UNI) Jamnagar, the coastal city of Gujarat, is celebrating its 469th foundation day today.
Citizens and authorities of the city have organised various cultural programmes to mark the day. In the morning, city mayor and other leading personalities of the city garlanded statues of city founder Jam Rawal, erstwhile ruler, and Mahatma Gandhi.
The city was founded by Jam Rawal in August 1540 (AD) on the banks of two rivers Rangmati and Nagmati and named 'Nawanagar' meaning new town. Nawanagar eventually came to be known as Jamnagar meaning the town of the Jams.
Jamnagar is well-know for the cricket love of its past rulers. The city has given two important cricket events -Ranji Trophy and Dulip Trophy- and half a dozen cricketers. As part of the anniversary celebrations, the royal family performed pooja of the foundation stone.Jamnagar Municipal Corporation has organised a Lok Dayra tonight on the occasion.
