Mahesh Gawli gets Dilip Sardesai Excellence award

Margao, Aug 7 (UNI) Mahesh Gawli, the international footballer, today received the prestigious late Dilip Sardesai Sports Excellence award.

Gawli, however, could not collect the award as he was in Hyderabad for the Asian Football Confederation Challenge Cup. The award was instead collected by his father Madhav Gawli from Goa Chief Minister Digamber Kamat at a function held at the Ravindra Bhavan Auditorium here.

The award comprises a bronze plaque of late cricket legend Dilip Sardesai, a certificate and and a purse of Rs one lakh.

Sports minister Manohar Azgaokar was also present at the function.

Chief Minister Digamber Kamat, who was the chief guest, announced that from next year the award money will be of Rs two lakh.

He lauded Gawli for his great and dedicated contribution to football.

He said all youths should follow late Sardessai's example, who played cricket with great passion and represented the country.

The state government insituted ''The Dilip Sardesai Sports Excellence award'' in fond memory of the late cricketer, who was of Goan origin.

He was a source of inspiration to the upcoming sportspersons in attaining greater heights in the international arena.

Nandini Sardesai, wife of late Dilip Sardesai, and their son Rajdeep Sardesai were also present at the award ceremony.
