Mumbai, Aug 7 (UNI) India's Under-19 World Cup winning captain Virat Kohli was a surprise selection for the one-day squad that will play five ODIs in Sri Lanka and the Champions Trophy to follow in Pakistan even as Sachin Tendulkar, Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh made expected comebacks into both the squads.
The national selection committee under the chairmanship of Dilip Vengsarkar met here today to select both the squads.
Young pace sensation Ishant Sharma has been rested for the one-dayers in Sri Lanka, but will make it to the 15-member Champions Trophy squad at the expense of fellow pacer Munaf Patel.
Indian Premier League's top performers Yousuf Pathan and Piyush Chawla also failed to make the cut for both the tournaments.
Yousuf played seven matches during the tri-series in Pakistan and the Asia Cup, but failed to make any impression and was dropped.
Tendulkar was forced to miss the tri-series in Bangladesh and the Asia Cup after failing to recover fully from his groin injury.
Zaheer, who last played in an ODI match in November last year, against Pakistan, after which he has been troubled by a spate of injuries.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni will return to captain the side after the wicketkeeper opted out of the three-Test series in Sri Lanka citing fatigue due to constant cricket.
As expected the senior batting duo of Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly were once again kept out after their lacklustre batting display in the ongoing Test series in Sri Lanka.
The five-match ODI series in Sri Lanka begins in Dambulla on August 18.
The 2008 ICC Champions Trophy, which will be held in Pakistan, will be played from September 11-28.
