Shillong, Aug 7 (UNI) Meghalaya Governor Ranjit Shekhar Mooshahary has stressed on the need for colleges and universities in the Northeastern region to focus on generating professionals rather than ''mass production of unemployable degree holders.'' Addressing the first convocation ceremony of the Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) here yesterday, Mr Mooshahary said, ''Most of the colleges and varsities in the Northeastern region are only mass production units of non-employable degree holders.'' The Governor lamented that admission into any college was difficult without high marks which the vast majority of students failed to score.

He lauded the MLCU for catering to the demands of the market in the structuring of its course content and skill building.

''The reputation of the MLCU is spreading across and beyond the country,'' he said.

Chief Minister Donkupar Roy informed that the state government was also looking to set up medical colleges with the support of private investors.

He also said the state government is coming up with a policy to encourage private investment for promotion of education in the state.

Expressing concern at the deteriorating standard of education in the state, the Chief Minister said, ''To revive Meghalaya's past glory as an educational nucleus, the MPA government is committed to paying special attention to uplift the education sector.'' UNI PB DPM SV ND1404
