Research on irrigation efficiency, climate change given priority
New Delhi, Aug 6 (UNI) Efficiency studies of completed major and medium irrigation projects, effect of climate change on water resources and reservoir sedimentation studies figure among the priority areas of research for the Ministry of Water Resources during the 11th five year plan.
Studies in respect of adaptation as a consequence of effects of climate change on water resources, simulation studies for selected water systems duly incorporating the features of the changed scenario, post facto evaluation and management plan for optimal benefit from the resources and initiation of benchmarking of irrigation projects for performance improvement are the other areas of study that have been accorded priority status for research during the plan period.
The Ministry also proposed to take up research with the active involvement of various research and academic institutions in the country including Water And Land Managment Institutes (WALMI), all Central Research Institutes (related to water sector), all research institutes of state governments, IITs, IISC Bangalore and all Universities recognised by the UGC, an official release said.
The sources said the Ministry was also providing financial assistance to various organisations for organising seminars and conferences on topics related to water resources.
