Vijayawada, Aug 6: At least four police personnel, including two circle inspectors, were seriously injured when two clashing groups pelted stones at the police who tried to control them at Vinchpet in old city here tonight.
Police sources told UNI that the trouble erupted following a love marriage of a couple belonging to two different families residing in the area and were not on good terms.
After the marriage, the bride and bridegroom approached the city city police commissioner for protection who in turn referred the matter to the town police.
Meanwhile, when the two families came to know about the marriage, an argument ensued and in this connection, a group brelonging to the bidegroom after presuming that the police were supporting the bride's family turned violent and pelted stones and bottles on the group of the bride.
The groups also closed down the shops in the area after they turned violent.
The police rushed to the spot where two circle inspectors and two home guards were injured in the stone-pelting by the groups. The group belonging to the bridegroom's family also attacked the house of the bride.
The sources said a person's throat was also slitted in the clashes and the seriously injured person was rushed to the government general hospital where his condition was stated to be serious.
Police forces were deployed in large numbers in the old city and the situation was still tense.
City Police Commissioner K V Rajendranath Reddy also rushed to the spot.
