Andreea Raducan, Gymnast, Romania: A promising all-round gymnast won a galore of medals in World Championships and Oly. A 17-year-old Raducan played a key role in Romania's gold medal performance in team event and also bagged individual silver medal in vault. Everything went fine for little Raducan till her gold medal winning performance in individual all-round event. She failed drug test after the event and IOC duly stripped her gold. She tested positive for pseudophedrine- a banned substance in two cold medicine pills she took unknowingly before the event. IOC tribunal took a lenient view in Raducan's case in not stripping a gold and silver she won in the events held much earlier. The case generated a significant amount of media attention, and Raducan was supported by members of the gymnastics community including her fellow countryman Nadia Comeneci. Her case was brought to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in the fall of 2000. Raducan was exonerated of any personal wrongdoing by the CAS. She was not subjected to any disciplinary measures. However, her medal was not reinstated.
