Pune, Aug 5 (UNI) Defending champion and host Maharashtra is expected to start firm favourites, having 178 athletes, in the prestigious Pune Mayor Trophy West Zone Athletics Championship, that gets underway at the Baburao Sanas Sports Complex tomorrow.
The two-day Championship, which is being held under the aegis of Maharashtra Amateur Athletics Association (MAAA) and Arjun Prabhodini of Mumbai, assumes importance as it provides an opportunity for the athletes to earn their berth in the ensuing 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games, scheduled to be held at the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports complex here from October 12 to 18.
Speaking to reporters today, MAAA Secretary General Pralhad Sawant said the inter-zonal athletics championship, to be held at Jamshedpur between August 20 to 22, will be the last chance for the athletes to cement their places in the Indian squad.
Maharashtra will be pinning its faith on the illustrious internationals Dhiraj Mishra, Shreya Vidwans, Sayali Dravid Swati Gadhave, Monica and Kavita Raut, Tanvi Shanbag, Anniruddha Gujar, Bhaygyashri Shirke and Saba Bhagat, in the Championship.
