Guwahati, Aug 5: BJP national vice-president Bijoya Chakravarty today demanded strict action against Bangladeshi infiltrators living illegally in Assam and advocated the use of force to deport them.
Quoting various government statements over the past one and half decade, Ms Chakravarty said the state had around 30-40 lakh Bangladeshi illegal immigrants.
She alleged that the Congress government, over the years, had been patronising the infiltrators for the vote bank.
''Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is the biggest betrayer of Assam,'' Ms Chakravaty said, adding that her party would carry on the fight against illegal immigrants.
About the deportation of one Md Kamaruddin, who contested the Assam Assembly election in 1996, the BJP leader questioned how Kamaruddin could pass the stringent scrutiny during the nomination stage.
''The BJP would like to know who had issued the certificate to the infiltrator who was deported to Bangladesh yesterday. I also would like to know the names of the lawyers who verified his nomination papers,'' Ms Chakravarty said.
The former Union Minister alleged that Mr Gogoi and the Congress was keeping silent on the issue owing to the fear of antagonising the Muslims and losing votes.
The BJP leader will contest the General Elections from the Guwahati Lok Sabha constituency.
