Security tightened in city for TN CM's visit
Madurai, Aug 5: Hours ahead of the arrival of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on a day's visit to Madurai, a security cover was clamped in the city, today.
Mr Karunanidhi, was scheduled to arrive here tonight from Tuticorin by Mysore-express. After an overnight halt at the Government Circuit House in the city, he will unveil the statue of former Speaker and late DMK leader P T R Palanivel Rajan at Chokkikulam Roundtana on the morrow. He will felicitate famous playback singers T M Soundararajan and P Suseela at a function to be held at Thamukkam grounds in the evening.
Police said in the wake of recent unearthing of a terror module in the Southern district of Tirunelveli, security has been tightened for Mr Karunanidhi.
Over 3,000 policemen drawn from various units of State police were deployed for bandobust duty. Anti-sabotage checks were carried out in the circuit house, convoy route and also at the function venues as a precautionary measure. The security exercises were carried out under the direct supervision of the Inspector General of Police (South Zone) Sanjeev Kumar.
Security was also beefed up in all the fourteen entry points into the city, police added.
