Panaji, Aug 5 (UNI) Dempo sports club's International Footballer Mahesh M Gawali will be presented the prestigious Dilip Sardesai sports excellence Award for the year 2008-09, being the highest Achiever at the recognised International Football competition for the year 2007-2008.
Goa Chief Minister Digamber Kamat today announced the award, which comprises of a Bronze Plaque of Dilip Sardesai, a Certificate and a purse of Rs 1 lakh. This year the award was proposed to be presented on the occasion of the birthday of late Dilip Sardesai on 8th August. However, his family desired to hold the presentation ceremony on the eve of his birthday and as such the function will be held on August 7 at 1600 hours at the Ravindra Bhavan Auditorium, Margao in south Goa.
Mahesh Gawali is presently representing India at the Asian Football Confederation Challenge Cup at Hyderabad, wherein the India Team has qualified for the Semi Finals to be played on 7th instant, as a result of which Mahesh Gawali may not be in a position to attend the function. However, his next of kin is being requested to receive the award on his behalf.
Government of Goa has instituted 'The Dilip Sardesai Sports Excellence Award', to be presented annually, as a tribute to this cricket legend of Goan origin and a source of inspiration to the upcoming sportspersons in attaining greater heights at the International Arena.
Mr Kamat also said as per the guidelines for presenting the award the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs invited applications from eligible candidates and about eight sportspersons had applied for the award.
Among them were Ms Domiana Gomendes (Football), Santosh Harijan&Vishwanth Naik (both Boxing), Mast Brandon Fernandes (Football), Ms Ivana Maria Furtado (Chess), Ms Parwar Borkar Geeta Vasant (Baseball), Ms Talasha Satish Prabhu (Swimming) and Mr Mahesh M Gawali (Football).
A Committee, constituted by the Government, having gone through the merits of each sportsperson, viz-a-viz their achivements for the preceding year 2007-08, recommended Mr Mahesh Gawali for the prestigious award, the Chief Minister added.
