Sydney Oly 2000: Marion Jones' fall from grace

By Staff
Marion Jones had the guts to confess that she doped during Sydney Games in 2000. She pleaded guilt before US tribunal and was duly stripped of all five medals.Marion Jones, sprinter, United States: The female version of Carl Lewis shot into fame in World Championships 1997 at Athens where she bagged gold in 100m dash and powered her US team to gold in 4X100m relay. She repeated the feat in 1999 World meet at Seville. She was expected to ape Lewis' LA Oly 1984 feat of four gold medals and did so in 2000 Sydney Oly. The LA-born athlete won gold in the three events and a silver and bronze. Her cup of joy in 2000 turned into a woes seven years later when she confessed that she had taken steroids during Sydney Games and had the courage (?) to admit that she lied to the press, doping agencies and more importantly to the juries during BALCO investigations. The US anti-doping agency suspended her from track and field in Oct 2007. IOC stripped her all five medal she won in Sydney. The US Federal court sentenced her to six months simple imprisionment on the grounds of perjury.
