Delhi hit by heavy showers, heaviest rain in a day this monsoon

New Delhi, Aug 4 (UNI) After lacklustre monsoon rains in June and July, the rain Gods today showered their bounty on Delhi with heavy showers lashing the Capital city, making it the heaviest rainfall in a single day this monsoon season.

The spell of heavy showers, which began at around 1600 hrs, continued throughout the evening, bringing mercury down by several degrees while at the same time throwing life in the city out of gear.

The rainfall of 73 mm was recorded till 2200 hrs, making it the heaviest rainfall in a single day this monsoon season, weather office said.

In fact, 73 mm of the rainfall is the second highest rainfall recorded in a single day in August in the last six years. The only time this figure has been exceeded was on August 2 last year when the city recorded 166.6 mm rainfall.

The showers brought down the maximum temperature to 34.0 Degree Celsius.

While bringing down mercury, the rain also caused traffic jams and waterlogging in several part of the city.

While traffic jams were witnessed at ITO crossing, Nizamuddin, Model Town, Azadpur and Ghazipur, reports of severe waterlogging were recieved from many parts of the city.

More rainfall could be in the offing in coming days with weathermen forecasting one or two heavy spells of rain in the next 24 hours.

Also, the weekend could see some heavy spell of rainfall with weathermen forecasting formation of a fresh low pressure area over Northwest Bay of Bengal around August 9.

''A fresh low pressure area is likely to form over northwest and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal around August 9,''the Met office said.

The Met office has forecast a generally cloudy sky in Delhi during the next 24 hours with one or two heavy spells of rainfall likely in the city.
