Life for 26 people in murder case

Karur, Aug 4 (UNI) A lower court today handed down life sentence to 26 people for their involvement in a sensational double murder case which took place near Melur in Madurai district of Tamil Nadu on July five, 1992.

It may be recalled that a dispute between two communities over acquiring a temple land on a lease basis at Sennagrampatti village near Melur, culminated with a group clash.

After a few days, the police and the district administration had convened a peace committee meeting which both the groups attended.

Two Dalits, Ammavasai and Velu, were waylaid and killed on the spot by a group of caste people. The incident occurred when they were on their way to their village in a bus.

Police had registered cases against 27 persons in connection with the murder and filed a chargesheet against them before an Additional Sessions Court in Madurai.

In his order today, District and Sessions Judge Ayyappan said the crime against the accused was proved beyond reasonable doubt.
