Srinagar, Aug 4: General strike called by breakaway Hurriyat Conference (HC) in protest against the alleged attack by ''communal forces'' on Muslims in Jammu region, crippled life in the Kashmir valley today.
Shops and business establishments remained closed and traffic was off the roads in response to the strike call.
Work in government offices, banks and other public undertakings was also affected.
The educational institutions wore a deserted look as students and teachers stayed away. The board examinations scheduled for today were also cancelled.
Reports of complete shut down were received from Baramulla, Sopore and other major towns of the north Kashmir where shops and other business establishments remained closed and traffic off the roads.
Similar reports were received from other district headquarters and other major towns, including south Kashmir district of Anantnag where three incidents of stone pelting were reported in the morning.
