Kolkata, Aug 4: Four persons were killed and seven injured when a defeaning blasts rocked Kolkata on Sunday, Aug 3 evening. The blast, which blew a huge crater on the road, was probably caused by an abandoned military shell, city police chief Gautam Mohan Chakrabarti said.
The blast occurred at Sarbamangala Ghat when some rag pickers were rummaging through the garbage for plastic bags, they said, adding the bomb was hidden under the heap of garbage. The injured were rushed to nearby hospital. Primary investigations by the North Port police under which the area falls, revealed that the bombs were crude in nature.
Among the dead are 19-year old Ramzan, a cousin of Deedar, and his grandfather Hasan Ali Sardar (55). Ramzan, a Surat resident, had come to Kolkata 15 days back. The blast ripped off his leg and decapitated Hasan Ali, who also had an arm torn off. Inside the shop, Deedar's head was ripped apart, though he was still breathing.
"A metallic plate, base ring and electronic circuits used to trigger shells were found. We are sure it was a shell," said a police officer.
