Lakhisarai (Bihar), Aug 3: The toll in the road accident in Lakhisarai district has mounted to 40 with five more persons succumbing to injuries, police said on Sunday, August 3. 35 dailyworkers had been killed and 15 injured, 10 seriously, when a truck chock-a-block with people and foodgrain sacks fell off a culvert and plunged into a rivulet near Ghongsa village on Saturday, August 2 night.
"Of the 10 seriously wounded, five died battling for life at a hospital at Sikandra in adjoining Jamui district," said S P Shukla, Superintendent of Police, Lakhisarai. Five others are in serious condition in the hospital, he said adding that all the bodies have been sent to Jamui for postmortem. The tragedy had occurred when 50 farm labourers were returning to their homes at Mansi in Khagaria district after sowing paddy at nearby Akauni village.
The driver lost control of the vehicle on the culvert without railings and the truck plummeted into the rivulet.
The truck fell into a gorge where most of the people perished. Rescue operations are still on, teams are searching for the missing persons.
