Minorities Forum urges CM to withdraw existing reservation
Tiruchirapalli, Aug 3 (UNI) Tiruchirapalli Zonal Unit of the United Minorities Forum today appealed to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi to withdraw the existing exclusive 3.5 per cent reservation for the Muslim and Christian minorities in education and jobs as it was against the interest of the Christian minorities.
Forum's State General Secretary A S M Marianallu and Zonal president P Pathinathan told mediapersons here that a resolution to this effect was adopted at the zonal executive committee meeting.
They said before enacting the existing Act, 300 Christians used to get admission in the MBBS course every year, but now only 97 of them were selected for the course. This year a Christian boy, who secured 1145 marks in plus two examination did not get MBBS seat, they added.
They demanded either the Government bring suitable amendment in the existing Act to enable the Christian minorities to get benefit, or bring a new Act, ensuring 15 per cent exclusive reservation for Christian minorities.
To draw Mr Karunanidhi's attention they said, the forum had decided to meet him in a delegation on September 15. Even after this, if the Government did not to do anything on their plea, the forum would organise a rally from Kanyakumari to Chennai during September to mobilise support of the people, they added.
