Wellington, Aug 2 : Auckland mayor John Banks is desperately trying to stop the porn bike parade in Queen St. from going through.
His argument is that the numerous topless porn stars who meander around the city on the motorbikes during the parade set a bad example for the society.
"In a perfect world we wouldn't have Boobs on Bikes in Queen St, but we don't live in a perfect world," The NZPA quoted the mayor, as saying.
"I'm very aware that in these post-Christian times, in this slack and ill-disciplined society, holding up a bylaw around what is decent and what is not will be very difficult," he added.
Nevertheless, Auckland City councillors will be deciding whether to rebut official consent for the topless bike parade at an extraordinary meeting.
Although the mayor has decided to go ahead with the outcome whatever it may be, he personally doesn't want Queen St. turned into 'front row of a strip club'.
"I have always been opposed to the objectification of women."
On the other hand, pornographer Steve Crow has insisted that nothing but bad weather can stop the event, and that Council permission is not needed to hold the parade, which promotes his Erotica Expo.
"As with any event, there are those who object or find it offensive, but the overwhelming majority of people are supportive," Crow said.
