New Delhi, Aug 1 (UNI) The Supreme Court today stayed till further orders the trial in the BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai murder case.
Member of Lok Sabha from UP Afzal Ansari and independent MLA from UP Mukhtar Ansari are the main accused in the case.
A bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justices C K Thakkar and P Sathasivam granted the stay on the petition filed by the CBI seeking transfer of the case from Ghazipur in UP to Delhi.
Counsel for the CBI contended before the court that prosecution witnesses in the case were scared as two witnesses have already been killed.
Mr Rai was shot dead in Ghazipur district in 2001 because of political rivalry.
The apex court also issued notices to the UP government and the accused in the case.
According to the CBI, free and fair trial is not possible in Ghazipur as no witness is prepared to take the risk of life by deposing against the two 'dons' who have criminal background and also have tremendous political cloud.
