Jammu, Aug 1 (UNI) Police today opened fire in air to disperse agitating mob outside the residence of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti, sources here said.

As Ms Mufti reached her Jammu residence after attending an all party conference called by the Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra at the Raj Bhawan, protestors amid anti-PDP and National Conference slogans attempted to enter into the her (Mehbooba's) house.

''Despite several attempts, the mob was out of control, which forced police to open fire in air to disperse them,'' official sources told UNI adding, ''The protestors entered into clash with police and pelted stones, while police resorted to lathi-charge and fired tear gas shells.'' Ms Mufti and former chief minister Farooq Abdullah today reached here to attend an all party conference at the Raj Bhawan over the ongoing tense situation that erupted after the Amarnath land row.

Earlier in the morning, thousands of agitators held hostage Dr Abdullah and Ms Mufti on their arrival at technical airport in Jammu.

The winter capital is burning over revocation of land transfer order, while the agitation turned aggressive after the death of Kuldeep Dogra, one of the protestors of Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti, who sacrificed his life during chain hunger strike on July 23.
