Kolkata, Aug 1 (UNI) Newcomer Parveen Kumar pumped two goals to lead East Bengal to a 3-1 win over Peerless Sports club in Sahara Premier Football League in the rain-soaked Howrah stadium today.
Young striker Parveen Kumar struck home in each half after Ashim Biswas gave East Bengal lead on the 22nd minute.
Parveen Kumar's two goals on the 28th and 66th minute led East Bengal to score three goals for the first time in this championship.
Peerless' consolation goal came through Emanuel's (jr) header during the extra time in the first half.
The win took East Bengal to 11 points from six matches and reduced the gap with league topper Mohammedan Sporting's 13 points, also from six matches in the first leg of eight-team competition.
Both will have to play one more match to complete the first leg before return leg begins on August 5.
Mohun Bagan were now with ten points from five outings.
Striker Ashim Biswas gave East Bengal into the lead on the 22nd minute when his leftfooter went home after hitting the upper post to beat Arunava Das. His goal was identical to his previous one in East Bengal's 1-0 win against Chirag United.
Six minutes later, Parveen Kumar buttressed the tally for the Kolkata giant when his rightfooter hit home 2-0.
Peerless Sports Club reduced the scoring line seconds before break when Emannuel headed home from an aerial cross from Manik 2-1.
Parveen Kumar the second goal of the day and his third of this season came on 66th minute when he shot home trapping a ball from Jayanta Sen, who was the main schemer for East Bengal.
Absence of stopper Suleh Musha, Alivto d Cunha and Mehtab Hussain was never felt, though the ground was almost unplayable as sidelines were not visible due to waterlogging after torrents rain. Even the mid-field was full of water.
