Kolkata, Aug 1 (UNI) Condoling the death of former CPI(M) General Secretary Harkishan Singh Surjeet, the party's West Bengal State Committee today said it was a great loss to the organisation.
Mr Surjeet was among the few leaders, who were responsible for the respect and dignity that our party command in today's national politics,'' Polit Bureau member and state committee Secretary Biman Basu said.
Paying tributes to the departed leader, Mr Basu said Mr Surjeet and Mr Jyoti Basu were among the 'Navaratnas' of the party's first Polit Bureau, formed after the split in the undivided Communist Party in 1964.
He said Mr Surjeet had contributed not only to the party but also to expanding the Left movement all over the country.
'' He also had the skill to hold negotiations with other parties.
Our party will feel his absence,'' Mr Basu said.
