Spelling mistakes land student in hospital

Gangtok, Jul 31 (UNI) A Class III student presently recovering at Central Referral Hospital here was allegedly between by her class teacher after she made two spelling mistakes.

Eight-year-old Sumitra Khatiwada, traumatised after assault by her teacher in school, was shifted at the female surgical ward after her swelling face.

Her father, Chabilal Khatiwada, said that his daughter was beaten up by her teacher Umanath Dhakal in the classroom during the fifth period on July 29 after she made two spelling mistakes.

The incident happened at a government primary school at Bodang Tangsingh, Khamdong, South Sikkim.

As per the traumatised student's version, the teacher also allegedly hit her hard in the stomach after which she lost consciousness. Later she started vomitting at her house and was taken to Singtam district hospital from where she was referred to the Central Referral Hospital in Gangtok.

The father has lodged a complaint with the Singtam police station.

The school authorities have tried to tone down the incident and said that the student was already ill and it was a minor beating.

Meanwhile, the state education department authorities said that a departmental inquiry will be initiated in the incident and necessary actions be taken.
