Kannur, Jul 31 (UNI) A farmer has threatened to commit suicide along with his family if the bank did not write off his loan immediately under the debt relief scheme announced by the Centre.

K Abraham of Eruvassery Valayam Kundu, near Sreekandapuram in the district, had availed an agriculture loan for Rs 50,000 in 2001 and another for Rs 15,000 from the Kannur District Cooperative Agricultural Rural Development Bank, Sreekandapuram branch.

He had repaid Rs 10,000 while the loan amount had accumulated to nearly Rs one lakh. The loan was given for a period of 15-years and as such the bank had told Abraham that his loan could not be written off as the loan period was not completed.

He had earlier given a letter to the Bank President, Joint Registrar and Nabard General Manager, requesting them to write off the loan under the scheme. As his pleas fell on deaf ears, he dashed off a threat letter to the bank.
