New Delhi, Jul 31 (UNI) The CBI today filed chargesheet against sacked Assam Education Minister Ripun Borah, a suspect in a murder case for allegedly offering bribe to an officer of the investigating agency for influencing the probe.
A CBI spokesman said the chargesheet was filed against Borah, journalist Mukul Pathak and businessman Ramesh Maheswari before the special judge under section 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and section 12 of Prevention of Corruption Act.
The CBI had arrested Borah and Maheswari for allegedly offering Rs 17 lakh as bribe to an officer, who was investigating a student murder case, in which Borah is the suspect.
Mukul Pathak, who the CBI claimed was another associate of the sacked Minister, was taken into custody on June 3 in Guwahati.
Daniel Toppo, District president of All Assam Tea Drive Students Union was a candidate during the 1996 assembly elections and Borah's rival, was murdered on September 2, 2000. The case was handed over to the CBI in 2001 after the Assam Police failed to make any breakthrough.
