Mumbai, Jul 31 (UNI) Two people, including an Assistant Police Inspector (API), were arrested by officials of Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), while accepting bribe of Rs one lakh from a film producer here.
ACB sources today said the complainant is a Bollywood film producer and is also engaged in supply of models for advertisements.
A case of cheating was lodged against the complainant with the Oshiwara police station. API Ramesh Wagh, the investigating officer, had been approached and informed that a cheating complaint was registered against the complainant. He demanded Rs 15 lakh from the complainant to avoid the arrest and disposal of the case. However, the matter was settled at Rs eight lakh. The complainant agreed to pay the amount in instalments.
Accordingly, the complainant paid Rs 1.7 lakh to Wagh through his friend and another accused Rajendra Shantilal Sanghvi. On July 29, Wagh called up the complainant and demanded Rs four lakh. However, after discussion, he agreed to pay Rs one lakh yesterday. Fed up of the harassment, the producer then approached the ACB office.
At around 2030 hrs, Sanghvi went to collect Rs one lakh from the complainant near Cooper Hospital on behalf of Wagh, where the ACB officials had laid a trap. They nabbed Sanghvi and thereafter apprehended the API from the police station.
The duo was produced before Additional Sessions Judge P H Mali for remand this afternoon, who remanded them to police custody till August 2.
