Tight security for historic temples in South TN

Madurai, July 29 (UNI) An unprecedented security blanket was thrown over the historic temples in South Tamil Nadu, following Intelligence reports of possible terror strikes in the state after the serial bomb blasts in Bangalore and Ahmedabad.

A senior police official told UNI here today that though there were no specific terror threat to any temple, the Intelligence agencies had sounded a general alert.

Sri Meenakshi-Sundareswarar temple in Madurai, Sri Ramanathaswamy temple at Rameswaram, Lord Dhandayuthapani temple atop Palani Hills, Arulmigu Nellaiyappar temple in Tirunelveli, Lord Karpaga Vinayagar temple at Pillaiyarpatti, Sri Rangamannar temple at Srivilliputhur and Kumari Amman temple in Kanniyakumari were brought under the security scanner. Officials of various agencies, including Special Intelligence Cell, were involved in the security arrangements.

In Madurai, all five majestic towers of Meenakshi temple was connected with intercom and wireless network. Speed Dome Cameras had been installed at vantage points to monitor the movement of people.

Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) was conducting anti-sabotage checks in and around the temple, the official added.
