Thane, Jul 26 (UNI) In a special general body meeting, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) passed a proposal worth Rs 8,385 crore for the total makeover of the traffic in the city.
The mega project, undertaken under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNRUM), was given a green signal by the special general body last evening. It will be implemented in a phased manner upto 2031 to ease traffic congestion and increase mobility in the city.
In the meeting, a feasibility report prepared by the consultants, Lee Associates of Canada, was discussed and passed the proposal. The consultants, appointed by the Union Urban Development Ministry, had submitted and presented a report to the general body of the corporation last week.
Mayor Smita Indulkar presided over the meeting, while Municipal Commissioner Nandakumar Jantre briefed the members about the proposal.
The project is likely to take off towards the end of this year.
It will include bypass roads, skywalks, multi-level flyovers, subways and additional civic transport buses.
As per the initial proposal, the corporation is required to arrange funds to the tune of Rs 3,445 crore, while the balanced will be funded by the Centre.
