Guwahati, Jul 26 (UNI) A football tournament will be organised at the Judges Field here from August 12 to mark its centenary celebrations even as the Assam government has decided to stop holding all its official functions at the ground, ending a three-decade long tradition.
This was disclosed at a press conference here today by Organising Committee general secretary Debajit Saikia, a Ranji cricket player-turned-senior lawyer at Gauhati High Court. Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, the president of the committee and the state Health Minister was also present at the event .
The tournament will feature 14-star football teams of the North East, including NF Railway, Oil India Limited, Assam Police and Shillong XI.
The Judge's Field, after years of neglect, has now been reserved only for recreational and sporting activities, and recently the whole turf was re-laid.
