Darjeeling, Jul 25 (UNI) GNLF supremo Subash Ghisingh and party's Darjeeling unit president Deepak Gurung were attacked by hundreds of rival Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) supporters here today, police said.
The two leaders were, however, unhurt, but two shots fired from the house of Deepak Gurung to repulse the unprovoked attack left two GJM supporters seriously injured.
The injured, one of them identfied as Promila Chettri, member of GJM's woman wing, were taken to a local hospital, DIG, Darjeeling range, Daniel Tsering Sherpa said.
The attacks and counter attacks fuelled tension in the hills, witnessing strikes, rallies and violence for the past six months over a demand for separate Gorkhaland state.
Mr Sherpa said reinforcements had been deployed to restore the situation which was very tense but under control.
Hundreds of GJM supporters, who arrived in processions, first attacked the house of former Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council Chairman Subash Ghishing on Dr Jakir Hossain Road with bricks and kukries and then moved to Deepak Gurung's house nearby.
They invaded the Deepak Gurung's four-storey house after police chased them from ransacking Ghising's house.
They ransacked Gurung's house and then set it on fire and a two-wheeler parked on the road.
To repulse the attack, two gunshots emerged from the house of Gurung possessing a licensed weapon, in which two received bullet wounds.
