Flood situation worsens in UP

Lucknow, July 25: With incessant rainfall continuing in Uttar Pradesh, the situation worsened with breaches in several dams in Sant Kabirnagar, Maharajganj, Siddharthnagar and Deoria districts of the state.

A large population of Uttar Pradesh has been affected with the disaster claiming 262 lives so far.

Official reports today said cracks had developed at 62 mtrs in 5.8 km long Saifabad Kalvari small dam at river Ghaghra in Basti, whereas the raging river had breached Rampur Makdumpur dam late last night.

In Sant Kabirnagar and Siddharthnagar, Karmaini dam on Rriver Rapti got badly damaged, whereas water had started seeping into the villages due to cracks in Prajapati Kalyan Patti and Varparva dams and had submerged nearly 1,500 villages here.

Fresh deaths in the last 24 hrs were reported from Sultanpur, Jaunpur and Basti.

In Sultanpur, 'kachcha makan' collapsed in Dauripur village and Paliya village killing four people and badly injuring seven, whereas, in Hardoi four were buried alive after coming under the debris of a house in Mahdumpur.

In Jaunpur, one Kamlesh Yadav succumbed to roof collaps, whereas four people were killed in Madha area in house collapse.

In Basti, four people were killed in roof collapse in Rudaula tehsil and two others succumbed in rain related incidents.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mayawati has instructed senior officials no laxity should be committed in relief and rescue work.

She further said money is not a concern and food, medicines and other requirements for the victims should be fulfilled in priority.

Seventeen companies of PAC have been deployed in the affected districts, an official spokesperson said.
