Sodhi fails to make it, 57 sportspersons for Olympics

New Delhi, Jul 24 (UNI) Double World record holder Ronjan Singh Sodhi's hope' for a miracle' did not happen as the shooter failed to find a place in the 57-member Beijing Olympic bound Indian squad.

Sodhi failed to get the "hardship quota" place as the World body of the sports, ISSF announced that it has no quota place left to redistribute.

Another hopeful archer Reena Kumari's last ditch attempt to get her self included in the squad also failed as her name also did not figure in the list.

Intrestingly 57-member squad will have a jumbo size 42-member support staff.

For the first time in India's olympic history, Hockey does not form the part of the squad, as the team failed to qualify for the Beijing Games.

India will be taking part in 13 displines- Athletics, Archery, Boxing, Badminton, Table Tennis, Lawn Tennis, Shooting, Swimming, Rowing, Judo, Wrestling, Weightlifting and Yatching.

Former World bronze medal winner long jumper Anju Bobby George will spearhead 17-member athletics challenge, followed by nine member shooting team which also includes among others Athens Games Silver medallist Rajyavardhan Rathore, Gagan Narang and Abhinav Bindra.

The archery team copmprises of Dola Banerjee, Pranitha Vardhineni, L Bombayala Devi and a lone male competitor - Mangal Singh Champia.

Led by medal hopes Akhil Kumar and Vijender, five-member boxing team, the largest ever for Olympics, will represent the country at Beijing.

Four tennis players- Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi, Sania Mirza and Sunitha Rao- are the medal prospects for the country, while four swimmers have also qualified but given their standard they will be there to ''gain international exposure.'' The contingent also include three wrestlers and as many rowers.

Table tennis, Judo and badminton will be represented by two members each, weightlifting and yachting will have one each.

The contingent will leave here in batches and the first batch is scheduled to leave on July 27.

The Olympics are slate to be held from August 8 to 24.
