New Delhi, Jul 23 (UNI) Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President Suresh Kalmadi today said the Commonwealth Youth Games 2008 and Commonwealth Games 2010 would be used as platforms to ensure healthy medals tally in the 2020 Olympics.
Talking to mediapersons here, Kalmadi said, ''we are not expecting too many medals in the Beijing Olympics this time.
But the CYG 2008 and CWG 2010 would groom the players for the 2012 Olympics in London and 2020 Olympics here.'' ''China is hosting the Games this time, so we need at least a gap of few years to host the same, to show our talents.'' Kalmadi was confident that India will notch up a healthy medal count in the 2010 Commonwealth Games with the government providing funds to provide proper facilities and quality coaches for the players.
''The good thing is that money is flowing into the country for training and offering facilities to the sportspersons. The government has given us Rs 700 crore for coaches and their trainings. And I hope till that time, we can expect performing the best from our groomed players,'' Kalmadi asserted.
''A total of 400 coaches have been appointed in various disciplines in view of the 2010 Games,'' Kalmadi informed.
''For us Commonwealth Games is like the Olympics.'' Speaking about the preperation of the Commonweath Games 2010, he said all the infrastructure would be ready on time.
When asked about India's chances in the Beijing Olympics Kalmadi said, ''Archers and shooters are looking in good stead.
We are expecting from them to do well in the Olympics.'' UNI PY AB HT1900
