Table topper Mohun Bagan held by Calcutta Port Trust in drawn match

By Staff

Kolkata, Jul 22 (UNI) Failing to capitalise on support from the home crowd, defending champions Mohun Bagan were held 2-2 by a struggling Calcutta Port Trust (CPT) in the Sahara Premier Division League here today.

League topper Mohun Bagan dominated the proceedings in both halves but failed to crack the defence of CPT and spoiled the home advantage for the first time.

The CPT defence comprising Rajib Ahmed, Simonta Das and Bidemi Daniel put up a solid display. They were ably supported by golie Gopal Das.

The green and maroon side, however, still held the pole position with 10 points from four matches followed by Mohammedan Sporting with nine points from three matches while East Bengal were at bottom with four points from three outings.

CPT were now with five points from four mathces, a point ahead of East Bengal.

There were not too many goal scoring moves worth mentioning, although Brazilian Jose Barreto and Mama, who scored a hattric each in previous matches, made several efforts to score.

The absence of the injured Ishfaq Ahmed was felt as Bagan struggled with new recruit James Singh (junior) who came in as a replacement.
