Mumbai, Jul 22: Legislative Council is House of seniors and hence is looked upon respectfully, and it's contribution in Maharashtra's progress is invaluable, Legislative Assembly Speaker Babasaheb Kupekar said.
Mr Kupekar was speaking on the occasion of a special programme organised to observe 71st anniversary of the Legislative Council at Central Hall in Vidhan Bhavan, here.
Legislative Council Chairman Shivajirao Deshmukh, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil, Deputy Chairman Vasant Davkhare and Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker Pramod Shende were present on the occasion.
Mr Kupekar said from the year 2000, it has been good practice to celebrate anniversary of the Legislative Council. Experts from various fields are elected on the Council, which helps to give justice to problems of the concerned fields. Keeping this in mind, to nominate 12 members by the Governor, it is necessary to set norms. Even though for the last two-three years State Government has taken very good decisions to solve problems of former members, they should also be treated respectably at administrative level, he said.
Members of State Legislative Council Gurunath Kulkarni, Ulhas Pawar, Divakar Raote, Nitin Gadkari and Member of Opposition Pandurang Phundkar also expressed their views. Mr Davkhare proposed vote of thanks.
