Mumbai, Jul 21 (UNI) Top Indian shuttlers, including Olympics bound Anup Sridhar and Saina Nehwal, will be seen in action in the first Tata Open All India Badminton Tournament, to be played at the Bombay Gymkhana courts here, from July 27 to 31.
The tournament will be organised by the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy under the aegis of the Maharashtra Badminton Association and will be sponsored by the Tata Group, it was announced at a press conference here today.
The tournament, which will carry a total prize money of Rs five lakh will see action in men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles and mixed doubles.
The tournament will also see a foreigner in British number one Rajeev Ouseph, who is taking part in an Indian tournament for the first time.
Speaking on the occasion, Prakash Padukone, director of the Padukone Badminton Association said this tournament has been launched to give more tournaments to the senior players in the country. ''It is important for us to have a good mix of training camps and tournaments for the development of a player. I hope through such initiatives we will be able to produce a player even better then me,'' he said.
Tata Services Ltd (Corporate Affairs) Senior Vice President Romit Chaterji said they were confident that this tournament will make a contribution in encouraging the prospects of badminton in the country.
The qualifying draw for this tournament will be held on July 27, with the main draw being held from July 28 to 31.
