TN Govt reopens 190 Cooperative Societies

Tiruchirapalli, July 21 (UNI) Thanks to the timely intervention of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, 190 Cooperative Societies, which were closed down by the previous AIADMK regime, now reopened for the benefit of the people, according to State Transport Minister K N Nehru.

Participating in a function, in which, Rs five crore of deposits collected by the Chinthamani Cooperative Super Market were refunded to the deposit holders here today, Mr Nehru said soon after the DMK Government came to power in 2006, it had written off Rs 7000 crore loan for the benefit of the struggling farmers.

Refunding the money to 1510 deposit holders, State Cooperative Minister Ko Si Mani said since Mr Karunanidhi would like to provide fresh lease of life to the Cooperative movement in the State, he had sanctioned Rs five crore for refunding the money to the deposit holders of the Chinthamani Cooperative Super Market.

Mr Mani said because of the timely assistance by the DMK Government on various occasions, the Cooperative super markets, which once became red, now started turning around and improved its sales activities.

The State Government's Food and Cooperation Secretary K Shanmugam said the Cooperatives were not in a position to refund the depositors money in the last ten years in the State. Now they can refund the amount wihout difficulty, he added.

State Forest Minister N Selvaraj, was among others, who spoke on the occasion.
