Nandigram, Jul 21 (UNI) At least 30 people were injured when the Trinamool Congress and CPI (M) activists engaged in a series of clashes near the border of Nandigram and Khejuri since last night with both the supporters using fire arms,police said.
Police had to lathi charge in different places to keep away the warring groups injuring 20 other persons.
A police vehicle was ransacked near Bhangabera bridge when it tried to enter the village to arrests Trinamool supporters. The villagers resorted to their old tactics of preventing police into the village by digging roads and putting logs on the streets, OC Nandigram Debasis Chakraborty said.
Local CPM leaders alleged that taking advantage of the release of CRPF forces from Nandigram and rejuvenated by their recent victory in Panchayat election, Trinamool supporters attacked CPM activists in different places of the border of Khejuri and Nandigram leading to the clashes.
Trinamool leaders, however, refuted the charge and said armed CPM activists from Khejuri side attacked them in Bhangabera village which they resisted. No arrest has yet been made.
Trinamool Congress MLA Subhendu Adhikary, when contacted over phone, said the party leaders would go to Nandigram tomorrow to make an on-the-spot study of the situation.
