AICF elated at Indian youth champions' performance

By Staff

Chennai, Jul 21 (UNI) All India Chess Federation (AICF) today hailed the performance of three Indian girls and three boys who bagged six titles and the squad 21 medals in all, in the Asian Youth Chess Championship which concluded in Iran today.

AICF secretary D V Sundar said here that this was a ''massive performance'' by our stars eventhough we had fared better when India hosted the same event in New Delhi a couple of years back.

''Our youngsters had a great showing in Georgia in 2006 in the world youth championships. But in the Asian events they have been facing greater resistance from countries like Iran and Vietnam eventhough China, a potential chess powerhouse, has been staying away from age group chess competitions at international level.''
