Shillong, Jul 20 (UNI) The Border Security force (BSF) has decided to float Village Defence Parties (VDPs) to help the frontier force check criminal and illegal activites taking place in the Meghalaya-Bangladesh border in the state.
Official sources said the decision was recently taken at a meeting with the headmen from Gumaghat, Cherragon and Borsora in West Khasi hills district areas bordering Bangladesh, in the presence of DIG BSF P K Purkayastha.
It was also decided that BSF and VDPs would jointly undertake patrolling along the Indo-Bangla border to keep a vigil on illegal infiltration, crimes and movement of rebels across the border.
Besides providing uniforms and torch-lights, the border guards agreed to provide training to VDP personnel.
The BSF officials assured the villagers of all possible assistance for development in the bordering villages.
