Panaji, Jul 18 (UNI) The Goa Football Association (GFA) has recommended Dempo Sports Club chief coach and secretary, Armando Colaco for the Prestigious Dronacharya Award for this year.
The GFA Secretary Savio Messias said Mr Armando's name was recommended to the All India Football Federation (AIFF), who in turn had forwarded the recommendation to the Union Government.
If Mr Armando receives the prestigious award, he would achieve the distinction of becoming the first Goan football coach to so do since its inception in the category of sports coaching (individual). He is the lone recommendation for the award in football, Mr Savio added.
He said as per sources in New Delhi, the AIFF has also recommended four footballers for this year's Arjuna awards -- Climax Lawrence, Deepak Mondal, Mahesh Gawali and Renedy Singh. Climax and Mahesh Gawali are both Dempo stalwarts.
Earlier, Brahmanand Shankwalkar (1997) and Bruno Coutinho (2001), both former Salgaocar players had received the Arjuna awards.
Dronacharya Award is an award presented by the Government of India for excellence in sports coaching.
Mr Armando has been in the forefront ever since Dempo claimed the prestigious Federation Cup and NFL Titles in the same season in 2004-05. With Dempo winning the inaugural ONGC I League in 2007-08, the AIFF named Mr Armando as the best coach for the S A Rahim Trophy, while his team also won the AIFF Fair play Trophy.
